I am a big fan of advocate general public should invest index fund / ETF for their stock portfolio, however, I would like to share 8 investing behavior, which shows you should not invest in index / ETF fund:
1. You want to invest in short-term (less than 3 years)
2. You are not satisfied with market return but expect to beat the market
3. You can take higher violability in order to receive higher return than market
4. You like to active manage your own portfolio due to personal satisfaction
5. You are truly value investing in the company and look for deep value dog and turn into star
6. You do not believe the efficient market and look for mispriced stock investment opportunity
7. You like to invest contrary to popular belief
8. You have a small amount of investing capital (less than 300K USD) but expect to make a comfortable living or retire from your job (in Australia) entirely by investing in an index fund.
